Council improves efficiency and safety from using TomTom WORK system

Pembrokeshire County Council is a unitary authority providing a full range of public services to 115,000 people living in the south west of Wales. It's a largely rural area covering 625 square miles and has a population density that is half that of Wales as a whole. The Council is responsible for 74 schools, directly manages and maintains 6,500 houses, and has to ensure that over 1,500 miles (2,400 kms) of roads are kept in good condition and are gritted during the winter months. It operates four mobile libraries and tends to large areas of public open spaces and playing fields.

With a large volume of jobs coming in daily, the buildings maintenance team was seeking ways to get more jobs done in a day by each employee. Now, as the call centre receives a request for a repair, it alerts the supervisor by e-mail and he is able to convert that directly into a work instruction that can be sent as an SMS message direct to the TomTom GO unit in an individual employee's vehicle. Satellite navigation is also enabling the teams to cut down travel times between jobs as well as contributing to reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Further flexibility has come from the simplicity of the TomTom WORK solution. Staff have needed a minimum of training and people are improving their skill in using the system incrementally. TomTom WORK also trained two of the Council's auto-electricians to fit the equipment so that installations can be carried out in-house quickly and cost-effectively.
